Enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think

Tonic Ska Choir member Darren “Lofty” Churchill recalls his experience of joining the ska choir.

Lofty performing with the Tonic Ska Choir

Lofty’s story:

It was with fear and in trepidation that I walked through the door for my first ever rehearsal with the Tonic Ska Choir. I was filled with nerves and self-doubt. One and a half hours later, I knew I had made one of the best and most positive decisions of my life. I had taken a chance and pushed myself out of my comfort zone.

Upon arrival, I was met with a room was full of friendly faces. I was reassured and made to feel comfortable right away. There was warmth and unity.

I found familiarity and comfort in performing tunes that have provided the soundtrack to my life. It was a privilege to belong to such a wonderful group of people sharing their love of ska together.

I look forward to and enjoy every rehearsal with the ska choir. Just four months later, and I have the experience of performing at three festivals, two events, as well as a studio recording under my belt. Incredible!!!

The ska choir is not only about raising my own spirits and wellbeing. I take great pride in sharing the happiness with those around me, and the audiences we have entertained.

Music really is a wonderful therapy and a tonic for the soul. I feel this journey is only just beginning.

I left that evening buzzing, and I have been ever since.

Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think.

Lofty x
