Tonic Music were delighted to present a lecture and seminar at the University of Huddersfield on 23rd March.

Once again, Tonic Music visited the University of Huddersfield, to present a lecture and seminar delivered by Programmes Lead, Jeordie Shenton. Presented to BMus (Hons) Popular Music students, the lecture and seminar was for the ‘Inside The Music Business’ module led by Dr Laurence (Loz) Colbert - drummer of the band, RIDE.

To start the afternoon, students were presented with a lecture on the ‘Prevalence and Contributory Factors of Poor Mental Health in the Music Industry’. The first part presented the findings of surveys and secondary data analyses, on the prevalence of anxiety, depression and other mental health disorders within the population of music professionals. Following this, the second part presented the findings of studies identifying contributory factors to poor mental health, including publications by Dr Adam Ficek (Tonic Music Psychotherapist), Lucy Heyman and Rachel Jepson.

“The lecture and seminar opened students’ eyes to a side of the music industry that’s too often ignored until it’s too late. By facing these realities early on in their career, the students leave not only more aware of the present, but better equipped for the future - whatever their path in music.”

Later in the afternoon, students participated in a seminar, consisting of group work looking at a series of case studies. Each case study focused on a particular tissue related to poor mental health in the music industry, with the students tasked with answering questions about what the presenting issues were and their impact upon the music professional, along with how these issues can be addressed.

This was the third lecture Tonic Music had presented, having previously provided a lecture at the Royal Northern College of Music and again at the University of Huddersfield in 2025. It is hoped Tonic Music will continue to provide lectures, to ensure mental health in music is taught on the curriculum of music related courses.

“It was great to once again present a lecture and this year, a seminar, at the University of Huddersfield. I hope the collaborative work between Tonic Music, Dr Laurence Colbert and the University of Huddersfield continues to develop, as a preventative approach to addressing poor mental health in the music industry.”
