Suicide First Aid Lite (SFAL) is comprised of two parts and teaches skills to identify someone who may be thinking about suicide and to pass the person onto a suicide first aider.

  • Suicide thoughts and suicide behaviour

SFAL training offers learning outcomes that are knowledge based and factual‭. ‬This training can be used as a stand-alone programme or as the first part of a journey to learn suicide prevention skills‭. ‬

The information in SFAL is easy to grasp for people of all skill levels and those with no prior knowledge of the subject‭. ‬It is‭ ‬designed to meet the needs of virtual groups and could be used as a forerunner to the one-day Suicide First Aid Programme‭.‬

Its estimated that 1 in 20 of us may think about suicide at any given time.

We use only the most experienced suicide prevention trainers to deliver this unique learning experience for anyone who seeks greater understanding and confidence to intervene with people at risk of suicide.

This 4 hour virtual course teaches suicide awareness and the theory and practice of suicide intervention skills, giving learners the knowledge and tools to understand that suicide is one of the most preventable deaths and some basic skills can help someone with thoughts of suicide stay safe from their thoughts and stay alive.

Course Details

Evidence Base

Two independent evaluations in 2016 and 2017 by Dr Paul Rogers demonstrated significant statistical change in 14 of 19 measures. Increased confidence and reduced anxiety in dealing with suicide, were among the leading outcomes.


Methods of delivery

Taught over 4 hours (online version) using tutor facilitated socratic learning, tutor-led practice sessions, mini lectures, group work and audio-visual presentations. This course has some interactive elements and is an emotionally engaging learning experience and is delivered in a safe and inclusive online learning environment, where group safety will be maintained throughout.


Pre-training requirement

No previous experience or training is necessary. Participants will be asked to self-reflect and empathise with a person having thoughts of suicide. There is no expectation on participants to share personal experiences. Who should attend? Everyone! These suicide intervention skills can be applied in any professional or personal setting. Anyone can learn the suicide prevention awareness knowledge and skills you will learn on this course.The more people who do, the safer our communities will be.


Course completion

Upon completion of the course you will receive a certificate of attendance from your SFAL Associate Tutor with the option to register for assured digital badge/certificate at an additional cost.


Date and time

The SFAL course (online version) will take place virtually between 1:00 - 5:00pm on your selected date. For on-site courses please see below.

Course Enrolment

Enrolment (online version)

Email addresses of all learners will need to be sent to the Suicide First Aid Associate Tutor at least one week prior to the course date. Virtual resources are sent out before the training date, these include a workbook and two further documents (Self-care and Values). These resources will be emailed to learners at least 48 hours prior to the course, along with a password to unlock the workbook. Learners will receive their virtual resources and a certificate of learning by email.

Who can attend

This course is open to organisations/groups working in the music industry.


We are able to offer various bursary options on this course for organisations, please email us to discuss the options available.


Music industry organisations are entitled to the Tonic Half-Price Bursary when participating on this online SFAL course, plus they can receive a further discount from the normal full course price of £1,000 when booking for their organisation (up to 20 participants - a total discount of 62%).
